The Review:
I have to say that I truly loved this book so much. I come from teenage years of reading epic fantasy like the Black Jewel's Trilogy, The Sevenwaters Trilogy and Lord of the Rings, so to me reading an Epic style fantasy that felt very reminiscent of those was a true pleasure. The world that Kate has built is very rich, complex and colorful. I love that it is so thought out and it takes its time to explore each faction. I would love to read a book where we get to explore this even further, a Codex of sorts of all the magic system and world aspects.
I absolutely loved Lira, our FMC, she was a strong female force, someone who at no point would back out of a fight and even in grief or pain, would stand up and besides those she loves. If you loved Aelin in Thrones of Glass, I can guarantee you will love Lira, because they are both warriors in their own way, fighting for a better future for their people and their found family.
There is a theme throughout this story of deep longing and grief that I found so beautiful to explore through the characters. There's a sense of loss in most of the characters, be it for their loved ones, their time, their future and even their lived experiences. I think this character exploration was one of the things I loved the most in how this book is written. And through the storytelling you find many nuggets of quotes that simply hit in the core of your heart.
"A reminder that grief doesn’t erase beauty, it sharpens it. Something can ache and still endure.''
"Grief has a way of loosening the things we’d otherwise keep buried, allowing them to surface without permission."
It also plays a huge role in understanding their magic system and how it develops and unfolds, which I found so absolutely touching. In real life grief can be such a powerful force, but finding a way to look at it from an angle of love and understanding is so poignant.
Exploring some of my favorite characters in the book, I have to mention Jorin and "the yeast resistance"! As a lover of bread, I never thought it would play such an important in a fantasy book! And there's even a little nugget of Marie Antoinette's famous quote "let them eat cake" which I found so endearingly funny. Jorin is just one of those characters that you can't help but adore, he could have his own "cozy fantasy" novella about baking and fighting a war and I would read it.
Now, let's get to the romance part of this book without spoiling anything. I will say this is a slow slow burn, it builds softly, quietly and it makes you wonder if it's all in your head at many points. I found it very reminiscent of the way Jane Austen wrote her love arcs, with tenderness and softness, where you are experiencing a deep yearning that even a brush of fingers feels like the biggest spark. I won't say who but this quote will tell you everything of how the longing was so igniting:
"Did you know you have strands of copper threaded throughout your hair?” I blink, caught off guard
“They’re not obvious. Most days it just looks dark brown, but in the firelight, when the flames catch just right, it threads through.” His thumb shifts, catching the gleam.
and... swoon
You will definitely get some romance, but I love that this story is really and truly about Lira and her journey through all of the moments she must endure, the suffering, the struggles and how in her own strength, fueled by the love and belief of those around her she can find herself and see who she was all along. Sometimes our found family is the one who truly reached our depths and pulls out the threads that secure and save us.
As a side note: take your time as a reader to explore this story, take notes, write them out if it feels a bit confusing at first. This is epic high fantasy, you are exploring a new world that has no threads in the real one. It might feel confusing at first but rest assured it will slowly develop. Make sure you read all the photos drawn at the beginning of the chapters and the excerpts at the top as well, there's a whole story being told in those, so don't miss it!
